A brief timeline of the Hawaiian Kingdom leading up to the overthrow of the Monarchy and many events after it.

What is the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement?

By: Isaac

The Hawaiian sovereignty movement is a political war that Native Hawaiians fight in order to gain sovereignty for Hawaii. This movement is one that Hawaiians have been fighting for since the Bayonet Constitution in 1887, when America sent armed militia to force King Kalākaua to sign the document known as the “Bayonet Constitution.” The document stripped the Hawaiian Kingdom of it’s monarchy and gave most of the power to America. Then, 6 years later in 1893 Queen Liliuokalani, who ruled over Hawaii at the time was overthrown by the United States Government after attempting to replace the Bayonet Constitution and restore the monarch’s power. Two years after that in 1898 the U.S annexed Hawaii was annexed for use of a strategic position. Hawaii became a U.S territory until 1959 where it became an official state of the U.S. As a result of the Native Hawaiians being taken advantage of countless amount of times, they have been fighting to gain sovereignty over their own lands from then till this very day.
